DIRFloortime® is a child-led, relationship-based approach that supports emotional, social, and developmental growth through meaningful interactions and play. Rather than focusing only on teaching specific skills, DIRFloortime® helps children build strong foundations for communication, regulation, problem-solving, and learning.
Key Features of DIRFloortime®:
- An “inside-out” approach – DIRFloortime® focuses on understanding the child’s individual thoughts, feelings, sensory needs, and experiences to support growth from within.
- Relationships are essential for development – Warm, affectively charged relationships lay the foundation for learning and growth. Meaningful emotional connections help children feel safe, engaged, and ready to learn.
- Parents are the cornerstone – Parents and caregivers play a vital role in the process. Parents mediate the DIRFloortime® model, which empowers families to support development during everyday interactions and routines.
- Every child is unique – Individual differences define the norm, not the exception. DIRFloortime® recognizes and respects each child’s unique strengths, challenges, sensory profile, communication style, and developmental needs. Individualized intervention supports the child at their current developmental level and builds upon their natural strengths and interests.
- A strengths-based model – DIRFloortime® meets children where they are and builds on the child’s interests, strengths, and natural motivations to encourage growth and connection.
- Focused on building core developmental capacities – Strengthening foundational capacities such as regulation, engagement, communication, emotional thinking, and problem-solving supports lifelong development.
- Process is emphasized over content – DIRFloortime® values how a child learns, connects, and interacts rather than simply focusing on correct answers or memorized information.
- A transdisciplinary approach – Therapists, teachers, caregivers, and other professionals work together to support the child’s overall development across environments.
- Flexible and widely applicable – DIRFloortime® can be used at home, in schools, clinics, and in the community. It supports neurodivergent and neurotypical children across a wide range of ages and developmental levels.
